Welcome to the 38th and last round of the French top flight in the 2020/2021 season. Things in Ligue 1 haven’t been exciting in the last couple of years but everything changed in this season. Table leaders Lille lost their first opportunity to win the title in the previous round. They managed only a draw against St. Etienne which kept PSG in the title race for the last round. Monaco are currently third after beating Rennes in the previous round. They just lost the Cup final to PSG and Monaco have to win in the last round if they want to play in the UCL next season. Lyon will be waiting for them to slip up because even a draw will let Lyon leapfrog them into third. When it comes to the relegation play off, there are six teams that could end up there after the last round.
With things close both at the top and the bottom of the table, Bitcoin Betting will be extremely popular in the last round. Below, we will cover the three fixtures that could make the biggest impact on the table. First, we have Lille in an away fixture against Angers. A win will make them champions so Lille need to go all out in this one. Next, we have the holding champions in an away fixture as well. They are facing Brest, a team that is trying to avoid the relegation play offs. PSG have to win and hope that Lille slip up or they will be dethroned. Lastly, we have Monaco facing against Lens, away from home. Monaco need to win to remain 3rd but Lens need the points as well. Angers vs Lille
The hosts’ unremarkable season might be about to change, as if they avoid defeat here they could stop Lille from becoming French champions for a fourth time. However six defeats from their last seven matches – five in which they trailed at HT – shows Angers might also be willing cannon fodder for the division’s best away side. The hosts could be a potential banana skin after registering their biggest Ligue 1 (L1) home win this term in their previous match here (3-0). However that was vs already-relegated Dijon, and Angers conceded the opener in four straight home outings prior (D1, L3). Angers did beat Lille once this season and they will certainly try to do it again. There is no pressure on them as they can’t drop down the table if they lose.
Only a win can guarantee Lille are crowned champions, but this gripping title race could still see the top three all finish on 80 points by the end of play. In such a case goal difference, and then goals scored, would decide the title – two metrics that favor defending champions PSG. Therefore Lille must equal or better PSG’s result, and having secured a league-high 12 points during the final ten minutes of fixtures this season, they should have the composure if a late strike is suddenly needed. The last time a L1 title race had one point separating first and second on the final matchday, the second-placed team triumphed, but Lille’s backline – the best away defense across Europe’s top-five divisions (0.61 goals conceded on average) – could be their saving grace. However, a disappointing H2H record at Angers during the 21st century (W1, D1, L3) will be worrying.
It all comes to the last fixture for Lille as they are eying the Ligue 1 title. They have been top of the table for most of the season and it would be awful if they can’t win it in the last fixture of the season. Angers have nothing to play for as their table position is secure. Nevertheless, Lille lost against them the first time they played this season which means they need to play much better this time around especially since this game will decide the title. With that being said, we are backing an Away Side Victory & Over 2.5 Goals outcome @ 2.03 odds.
Angers vs Lille
Brest vs PSG
A return of just one victory from Stade Brestois’ previous nine Ligue 1 (L1) outings (D4, L4) sees them sit just one point above the relegation play-off spot ahead of this final round. The hosts have lost the last eight competitive H2Hs – half by a three-goal margin – which doesn’t bode well considering this likely to be a ‘must win’ clash if they’re to secure a third straight top-flight season next term. Winless across four consecutive L1 home games (D3, L1), ‘Les Brestois’ sit on the verge of a five game winless run here in a single season for the first time since 2012/13! Nonetheless, 28 of their 41 season points (W8, D4, L6) have come at home where seven of their eight wins saw them score first within 30 minutes.
Fresh from claiming their 14th Coupe de France trophy, Paris Saint-Germain know that anything less than victory here will see them miss out on a joint-record tenth top-flight title. However, a worry for them will be that they’ve failed to win their final L1 road trip in four of the previous five campaigns (W1, D3, L1). The good news is that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have won six their previous seven L1 away fixtures (D1), netting within the opening 20 minutes in each of those victories. Furthermore, they’ve found the back of the net before HT in a league-high 77.78% of their L1 awaydays, and subsequently are the only L1 side yet to trail away at the break (HT: W11, D7).
PSG still have a shot at the title but the most important thing they need to do is win this fixture against Brest. Of course, they also need Lille to slip up but if they can’t get all three points here, Lille will be champions regardless of what they do in their last fixture. Brest, on the other hand, are not safe from relegation and they need a positive outcome here. However, that would be tough to achieve since they haven’t gotten a positive result against PSG since 2011 when this fixture finished 2:2. For that reason, we are backing a -1.75 Asian Handicap outcome @ 1.85 odds.
Brest vs PSG
Lens vs Monaco
The hosts have enjoyed a successful first season back in Ligue 1 (L1) but head into the season finale on a three-game losing streak. Losing 1-8 on aggregate in that time and being down at HT/FT in all three means they’ve failed to turn a HT deficit into a win all season (D5, L8), cutting short their Europa League push and now jeopardizing their Europa Conference League qualification. Finishing in the top half of L1 for the first time in 15 years, the 0-3 loss to Lille last time out ended Lens’ seven-game unbeaten run at home (W3, D4). Netting the first goal on five occasions here has been a key factor in their success, as Lens have only managed to rescue one point from a possible 18 when conceding first at home (D1, L5).
Visitors Monaco still have a puncher’s chance of claiming the title, with goal difference the differentiator should they end equal on points with Lille and/or PSG. A big win here is therefore a must – especially as they need to fend off Lyon in the hunt for the remaining Champions League place – and with eight of their last nine league wins coming ‘to nil’, keeping another clean sheet will help make up ground on goal difference should they be victorious. Monaco have been rampant away of late, winning ten of their last 11 in L1. Averaging 4.45 shots on target per game in that run, taking their chances will be key, considering that 66.67% (8) of their away wins this L1 season have come via a one-goal margin, which wouldn’t be good enough to challenge the league leaders if they tied on points.
Monaco need to win this game if they hope to play in the UCL next season. However, they could even become champions if both PSG and Lille lose their games, which is highly unlikely. On the other hand, Lens need points as well. They are currently sitting on the last UEL spot which will take them to the conference league, giving them a chance at Europa League. If they lose to Monaco and Rennes win their game, Lens will lose this opportunity which means they will do their best to get a positive result come Sunday. Nevertheless, we believe Monaco will win which is why we are backing an Away Side Victory @ 1.65 odds.
