Video Poker Information Books and Playing Strategies

Video Poker-Optimum Play

Probably the best video poker book, October 7, 2003 Reviewer: A reader from Midwest Having the discipline to play video poker correctly depends to a large extent on understanding the "Expected Value" of hands. There is no magic to this, it is pure mathematics. Yet, until reading Paymar's book, I never REALLY understood it, probably because I'm pretty much a mathematical idiot. However, Paymar explains the concept in a clear, non-technical way while still conceding that NOBODY can play perfectly according to expected value. I went from just having blind faith in expected value to accepting it as fact. He goes on to provide sound strategies for virtually every form of video poker. I've been playing almost nothing but video poker in casinos for over a year (I've pretty much given up on slots) and, while I often came out ahead, I had never gotten a royal flush. A couple of months after reading this book, I hit one. Sure, luck was involved, but I credit this book with helping me maintain the discipline to play correctly.

Million Dollar Video Poker

Other reviewers have commented correctly that this is not another how-to book about playing video poker perfectly. Bob Dancer and others already have written those books. This new one offers: (1) a surprisingly revealing account of Dancer's rags-to-riches life over the past 20 years; and (2) his advice about preserving one's bankroll and soul while gambling to earn a living. Video poker happens to be the venue because that is Dancer's game of choice. But anyone who aspires to being a winning gambler should read this book. In addition, the book is a fun read. The Dancers' climactic $1,000,000 win is merely the happy ending of an adventure that often threatened to end badly.

Beginners Best Shot at Video Poker

"Beginners BEST SHOT at VIDEO POKER" is a 96 page paperback with two color poker hand illustrations. The book focuses on Jacks or Better video poker because this is the most popular of the various video poker game variations and can be found just about anywhere these machines are offered. Accurate and effective winning strategies are presented in a simple and easy to understand format that is not only valuable to experience poker players, but also to newcomers to draw poker with no playing experience at all. Included in the book is a brief history of poker, how Jacks or Better five card draw poker is played and the differences between draw poker and video draw poker strategies. For those who are interested, there is a complete explanation of how the best plays to make at the machines are calculated. Along with some interesting observations about casino gambling myths and some common sense advice about casino play in general, the reader is promised a little "secret weapon" that he or she can take to the machines and use while playing. This is actually a simple "crib" sheet about the size of a pack of cigarettes, that the player can use for quick reference as the different draw options present themselves. After a while, the player will have this information memorized. Until that happens, he or she can be playing like an expert right away!
