If your cards make up a winning hand you will be offered an opportunity to double your money or to collect your winnings. If you have won, the game will offer you an additional opportunity to increase your winnings by participating in a doubling phase. If this option is not turned on the game will not allow you to double on a winning hand. I call video poker an advantage game because, unlike most casino games, it is possible to be a long-term winner. Note that I wrote "possible," not "probable." Casinos make a lot of money off this game, just as they do off blackjack, another game where it is possible to be a long-term winner. The parallels between video poker and blackjack don't end there. The games are also similar in that you will lose much more quickly if you play badly than if you were to play some of the pure chance games like craps or roulette. And just playing pretty well doesn't allow you to be a internet casino winner: You need to play perfectly. Here is where video poker and blackjack start to diverge. While playing perfectly as a blackjack card-counter isn't easy, once you master it, you can make pretty good money -- until they bar you, which is why I advise against trying to become a card counter. Video poker works differently because there are so many different machines, each with a different optimal strategy, available. Anyone who wants to play video poker should pick one kind of machine and master the strategy for that machine before venturing on to others. Many of the best plays in video poker are not intuitive. Just knowing how to play regular poker won't get you very far. You need to know what cards to hold and what cards to discard, and a general good sense for cards just isn't enough. A lot of players who enjoy video poker like it because they believe their decisions play a role in their outcome. They are right, so it becomes important to make good decisions.
